Discrete Particle Simulation of Granular Flow
نویسنده
چکیده
Granular materials, which can be either wet or dry and range from nanometers to centimetres in size, are widely encountered in industries and in nature. As with solids, they can withstand deformation and form heaps; as with liquids, they can flow; as with gases, they exhibit compressibility. These features give rise to another state of matter that is poorly understood (Ennis et al., 1994; Jaeger, et al., 1996; de Gennes, 1999). This can be highlighted from the study of granular flow which, corresponding to the fluidand solid-like modes, has different flow regimes such as quasi-static regime, rapid flow regime and a transitional regime that lies in between. Development of a general theory to describe granular flow has been a challenging problem in the scientific community for years (see, for example, Edwards and Grinev, 2001; Kishino, 2001).

CFD Modeling of the Feed Distribution System of a Gas-Solid Reactor
Granular flow simulation using CFD has received a lot of attention in recent years. In such cases, CFD is either, coupled with Discrete Element Method (DEM) techniques for appropriate incorporation of inter-particle collisions, or the Eulerian CFD approach is used in which granular particles are treated as they were fluid. In the present study, a CFD analysis was performed...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Granular Column Collapses with Pressure-Dependent Viscoplastic Model using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic Method
This paper presents a numerical analysis of granular column collapse phenomenon using a two-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics model and a local constitutive law proposed by Jop et al. This constitutive law, which is based on the viscoplastic behaviour of dense granular material flows, is characterized by an apparent viscosity depending both on the local strain rate and the local press...
متن کاملA Numerical Simulation Study on the Kinetics of Asphaltene Particle Flocculation in a Two-dimensional Shear Flow
In the current study, the kinetics of asphaltene particle flocculation is investigated under a shear flow through numerical simulation. The discrete element method (DEM) is coupled with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model the agglomeration and fragmentation processes. In addition, a coalescence model is proposed to consider the attachment of colliding particles. The changes in mean asph...
متن کاملNumerical Investigation of the Influence of Sand Particle Concentration on Long Radius Elbow Erosion for Liquid-Solid Flow
Erosion caused by sand transportation in flow changing devices is a serious concern in the hydrocarbon and mineral processing industry, which entail to failure and malfunction of flow devices. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with discrete phase models (DPM) were employed for analysis of carbon steel long radius 90-Degree elbow erosion due to the sand concentration of 2, 5 and ...
متن کاملDiscrete element study of liquid-solid slurry flows through constricted channels
Discrete element model is used to simulate the flow of liquid-granule mixtures in an inclined channel containing a linear contraction. All the relevant particle/particle and particle/fluid interactions are included in the numerical model. The presence of the contraction induces different steady morphologies of the solid phase or the mixture depending on whether closed or open channels are used....
متن کاملAssessing continuum postulates in simulations of granular flow
Continuum mechanics relies on the fundamental notion of a mesoscopic volume ‘‘element’’ in which properties averaged over discrete particles obey deterministic relationships. Recent work on granular materials suggests that a continuum law may be inapplicable, revealing inhomogeneities at the particle level, such as force chains and slow cage breaking. Here, we analyze large-scale three-dimensio...
